Germany just hit a major milestone in its renewable energy transition – for the first time ever, solar power fed 12 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity into the public power grid in a single month. This happened in July 2026, and it’s a big deal because it shows just how much solar energy is contributing to the country’s electricity mix. The actual amount of solar power generated was even higher, since this number only includes electricity that was fed into the public grid, not the stuff that was used directly on-site.

The numbers are pretty impressive – at peak sun hours, solar power output was over 40,000 megawatts, which is equivalent to the power of more than 40 nuclear power plants. This meant that a significant amount of electricity that would have been produced by coal and gas plants was displaced by solar power. The organization that analyzed the data, the IWR, says that this milestone represents a major shift in Germany’s power system, with solar power becoming one of the main sources of electricity.

The IWR also pointed out that the way people talk about solar subsidies can be misleading – it’s not like every kilowatt-hour of solar electricity is fully funded by the government. Instead, the system works by selling the electricity on the market and then covering the difference between the market price and the statutory feed-in tariff. This means that the actual cost of supporting solar energy is often lower than people think, and it’s expected to decrease even more as older solar installations reach the end of their compensation contracts.
