On the Fourth of July, Midlothian firefighter Jason Horne, while off-duty and at Alvarado Park Lake with his daughter, rescued three children trapped under a capsized pontoon boat. Upon noticing a group waving for help, Horne dove into the water and found that the children were stuck beneath the boat. He first rescued a lethargic boy who was awake and breathing, followed by a girl who was not breathing; he performed chest compressions to revive her. After learning that a third child was still under the boat, Horne dove again and, with the help of other boaters, retrieved the boy who was entangled in ropes. Horne performed CPR on him until they reached shore, where first responders were waiting. All children, who were wearing life jackets, were taken to a local hospital but reported no life-threatening injuries. Horne humbly stated he wasn’t trying to be a hero but was just in the right place at the right time to make a difference. The children’s family expressed their gratitude for his actions.
