So, you know how sometimes you sign up for a subscription service and then realize you don’t want it anymore, but canceling is a total nightmare? Well, New York City just made a big change to make that process way easier. As of October 1, companies have to let customers cancel their subscriptions just as easily as they signed up – no more spending hours on the phone with a customer service rep trying to convince you to stay.

This new “click-to-cancel” rule means that businesses have to be super clear about the terms of your subscription, including how much it costs, how often you’ll be billed, and how to cancel. They also can’t make you pay to return anything they gave you for free, which is just nice. The rule applies to all kinds of subscriptions, like streaming services, gym memberships, and subscription boxes. And if a company doesn’t follow the rules, they could face some pretty hefty fines – up to $3,500 for repeat offenses.

The city estimates that this new rule could save residents between $21.5 million and $162.5 million per year, which is a pretty big deal. And it’s not just New York City – the FTC actually approved a nationwide click-to-cancel rule back in 2024, but it’s been delayed a few times. Meanwhile, companies like Amazon have already gotten in trouble for making it hard for customers to cancel their subscriptions. Amazon actually agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle allegations that it misled customers into joining Prime and made it hard to leave. So, it’s nice to see New York City taking steps to make things easier for consumers.
