Ducks Unlimited and Groundswell Conservancy have teamed up to protect a huge chunk of land in southern Wisconsin – nearly 2,000 acres along the Lower Sugar River in Rock County. This is a big deal, not just for the area, but for the whole state, as it’s one of the largest land conservation efforts in recent years. The property, which used to be the Applegate-Bader Farm, has over two miles of river frontage, wetlands, forests, prairies, and floodplain habitat that are home to all sorts of wildlife.
The project is a major win for conservation, and it’s thanks to the partnership between these two organizations, as well as some generous donors and public partners. The property will be opened up to the public for recreation, including hunting, fishing, and hiking, which is great news for outdoor enthusiasts. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will eventually take over ownership and make sure the land is protected for years to come. This project is not only good for wildlife, but it will also help improve water quality, reduce flood risk, and make the landscape more resilient.
The whole thing was made possible by a bunch of different grants and donations, including a Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program grant and a North American Wetlands Conservation Act grant. It’s a great example of what can happen when people work together towards a common goal. The project will have a lasting impact on the area, providing habitat for all sorts of species and benefiting the local community. It’s a big achievement, and it’s going to make a real difference for the environment and for people who love the outdoors.
