The subway system also saw a significant decrease in crime, with zero murders, shooting incidents, or rapes reported in August. Robberies in the subway decreased by 30.8% compared to the same time last year. Public housing developments also saw a decrease in crime, with zero murders reported in August and a 65% decrease in shooting incidents.
The NYPD has been working to reduce crime through various initiatives, including the Summer Violence Reduction Plan, which deployed officers to areas with high concentrations of violence and disorder. The department has also been focusing on combating hate crimes, with a 15.8% increase in confirmed hate crimes reported so far this year. Despite this increase, the NYPD has seen a decrease in anti-Jewish hate crimes in August, with 19 reported incidents compared to 22 last year.
