10-Year-Old Ukrainian Gymnast Wins Gold After Losing Leg In Russian Strike

In May 2022, young Ukrainian rhythmic gymnast Sasha Paskal and her mother, Maria, were at their seaside home in Zatoka when a sudden Russian missile struck without warning. The explosion leveled the house and trapped Sasha beneath a massive concrete slab, causing severe head injuries, a dislocated arm, and crushing her left leg. After being rescued by neighbors, Sasha spent over two weeks in a medically induced coma; ultimately, irreversible loss of circulation forced doctors to amputate her left leg.

Refusing to let the life-altering injury end her athletic dreams, Sasha declared that her passion for sport was greater than her loss. After seven months of intense rehabilitation and learning to navigate life with a prosthetic limb, she returned to rhythmic gymnastics. Remarkably, just months into her return, she won her first competition performing with a prosthesis, an achievement that earned her the prestigious “Future of Ukraine” state honor from President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska.

Today, Sasha’s story of endurance has reached a worldwide audience through the “Dance of Freedom Tour,” an initiative created to highlight the resilience of war-affected Ukrainians. Traveling to major cities including Paris, New York, Rio de Janeiro, Nairobi, and Tokyo, Sasha uses her athletic talent and dance to share her journey, distract from the hardships of war, and represent Ukraine’s ongoing fight for freedom.
